John P Hagan Solicitors , JPH LAW Portadown News – Legal Implications for EU citizens in Britain consideredFor the estimated 3m non-British EU citizens living in the UK the vote to leave has proved unsettling, suggest the Guardian’s Lisa O’Carroll and Jon Henley, as leading lawyers agree the status quo is unlikely to continue given that immigration was so central to the Brexit campaign. “There is no cast-iron guarantee on acquired rights in the event Britain leaves the EU. If you leave the EU you are no longer a member of the club that gives you those rights,” said Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, professor of law at Queen Mary University of London and an expert in European law. Nick Rollason, immigration partner at Kingsley Napley, suggests an inevitable consequence will be that people will need new documentary evidence of their right to remain. The Times says a surge in immigration from other EU countries is likely as Europeans seek to get into Britain before possible curbs are imposed. Susan Hay, an immigration expert at Pinsent Masons, notes that “UK businesses which are reliant on EU workers need to consider contingency plans.”
