MPs requested an inquiry into NHS compensation payouts after a decision last year to put aside £56bn – half the NHS budget – for payments to patients. According to the Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers, the NHS Litigation Authority loses 76% of the cases it is involved in and a reluctance to pay compensation early drives up costs to greater than they should be.
