The case of William Owen, from Preston, an enthusiastic runner who was found to have made a “fundamentally dishonest” insurance claim for personal injury after his Twitter account showed him to be competing in races, highlights the way in which insurers have added social media to their methods for spotting fraudsters, using status updates, YouTube videos and links between lists of friends on Facebook to undermine made-up claims.

The extra tools for insurers to spot fraudsters come at a time when the industry says there is a sharp spike in the number of false claims, with opportunist fraudsters not appearing to fully grasp the public aspect of social media.
