Tougher charity guidelines to prevent abuses
New guidelines proposed today will allow people to “opt out” of being contacted by charities in future. The government-commissioned review into fundraising calls for an overhaul of the current guidance which allows charities to swap data and target vulnerable individuals for cash donations by phone or through direct mail. The review, led by NCVO chief executive Sir Stuart Etherington, also proposes abolishing the fundraising regulator and replacing it with a body with powers to name and shame rogue charities.
