EU conducts state aid probe into Portsmouth Council’s cargo firm
The European Commission has announced an in-depth investigation into whether Portsmouth City Council’s grants to cargo company MMD Shipping amounted to illegal state aid. The move marks the first time a British firm has been on the receiving end of a Commission probe since the UK voted to leave the bloc. MMD, which has been owned by the council since 2008 after it ran into financial trouble, pays the council each year to use about 20 acres on the Portsmouth quays.
