Property fraud on the rise

The Sunday Times highlights a recent rise in cases of conveyancing fraud, where criminals attempt to “steal” a home, most commonly by selling or mortgaging it without the owner’s knowledge. In the year to March 2016, the Metropolitan Police received 1,029 reports of rental fraud, totalling nearly £2.5m; and since September 2009, the Land Registry says it has prevented more than £80m worth of property fraud. In a landmark ruling by the High Court last month, lawyers acting for a bogus seller and those acting for a duped buyer were found equally liable for the fraud, which saw the would-be-buyer conned out of £470,000. “This case looks for the first time at the obligations of the seller’s solicitor to the purchaser even though they don’t have any contractual relationship with the purchaser,
