JPHLAW Guide to Whiplash

Even if you are a safe driver who consistently practices safe driving habits, getting into an accident even minor, may be somewhat unavoidable. Many times, drivers will experience a rear-end collision without any indication of an impending problem.  If you have been in a car accident and you are experiencing pain, decreased motion and tightness in your neck, you may have whiplash. In some cases the pain is immediate, but for some, the symptoms of whiplash can happen hours, even days, after the collision.
Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash

Neck strain is commonly referred to as whiplash, especially in the event of a car accident. An impact that causes your head to jerk backwards or forwards can cause serious neck strain. The sudden force from an accident stretches and tears the muscles and tendons in your neck.

Other whiplash symptoms include:

•    Soreness or jaw pain
•    Weakness in one or both arms
•    Pain when moving your head from side to side
•    Extreme tenderness in the neck
•    Headaches starting at the base of the skull that radiate to the forehead
•    Blurred vision
•    Dizziness or vomiting

For those who have experienced a collision that includes forceful jerking of the neck and head, whiplash may not begin to appear right away. Many times people will refuse medical help because they feel fine. This is because the amount of adrenaline and cortisol running through the body often masks the symptoms of whiplash. If you have been in an accident, never refuse medical attention. Doctors and nurses understand the affect these hormones have on the body, making an MRI or CAT scan necessary for those who experience a high impact collision.
Other Neck Injuries:

Commonly confused with neck strains or whiplash, neck sprains are caused by damaging the muscle or tendons, where bands of tissue connect muscle to the bone. Neck sprains are caused by severe force, leading to tearing of the ligaments, the tissue that connects the bones to each other in the neck. Treatment for both neck strains, whiplash and neck sprains are typically the same.

Making a Personal Injury Claim for Whiplash

In order to ensure you are able to make a viable claim regarding your injury, seeking medical attention immediately after an accident is crucial. Seeking medical attention is not only for your own health and safety, but to include in your personal injury claim. The faster you seek medical attention for your injuries, the easier it is to provide proof of an accident related injury.

An experienced car accident solicitor can also help you get the compensation you need to cover your medical expenses and lost wages, especially if the accident was not your fault and you have experienced an injury. We can help explain what your legal rights are and help you receive the maximum compensation for your injuries and medical expenses.
