Theresa May and Francois Hollande have announced a clear agreement that Britain’s border controls in Calais will remain in place despite the UK’s vote to leave the EU. Speaking in Paris after their first meeting, Mrs May said: “We are both very clear that the agreement should stay” while Mr Hollande added: “We consider it as our duty… to apply it and also to improve it”. However, the French President went on to say that although he recognised the UK needs time to prepare for Brexit negotiations, France would prefer them to happen sooner rather than later. He also said the UK could only get access to the single market if it accepted the free movement of people. Mrs May said she would deliver on demands for “controls” on movement.
